<p>Some might question what kind of improvement SATA 6 Gbps (SATA III) brings over its predecessor, the older SATA 3 Gbps interface. While ordinary hard drives are hard-pressed to show any noticeable performance increase, with twice the amount of maximum data bandwidth set by previous standard, SATA 6 Gbps provides the necessary headroom needed by Solid State Drives (SSD) to show their true potential.</p>

<p>SATA 6 Gbps SSDs have become ubiquitous today, with a number of brands sporting models armed with the venerable Sandforce 2 controller. In this round up test, we will compare 5 such SSDs in a head-to-head battle of performance and overall value. But first, a brief description of the controller chip that powers these super-fast storage!</p>
<h3>Sandforce SF-2000</h3>
<p>The SandForce 2 (SF-2000) represents a significant advancement from the first generation controller chip, with the most noticeable being the increased data transfer speed of 600 MB/s, twice as fast as the 300 MB/s of its predecessor. Progress has also been made to the TRIM department. SandForce 2’s DuraWrite feature works perfectly in restoring the SSD’s performance regardless of the type of files involved. The first SandForce was a bit problematic in this regard, whereas its DuraWrite functionality could not perform well with compressed files (either lossless or lossy). The only way to restore performance in the case of the first SandForce was to use Secure Erase, which also destroys all data contained in the SSD.</p>

<p>In this article, we compare five SandForce SF-2000 SSDs currently on offer from four different brands. As for the capacity, we opted for a 120 GB model from each manufacturer since that would provide a good balance between price, storage space, and performance. 60 GB (or less) SSDs are simply too small for today’s space-hogging applications. Additionally, they are also slower compared to 120 GB alternatives.</p>

Have you read our stand-alone <a href="http://www.jagatreview.com/2012/01/review-ocz-synapse-cache-improve-hard-drive-performance-without-raid/" target="_blank">performance review of the OCZ Synapse SSD</a>? Despite its intended purpose as “caching drive”, this SSD performs almost as well as OCZ’s other offerings. In this second article, we will discuss how much performance improvement one can expect by pairing an ordinary hard drive with the Synapse.</p>
<p>As mentioned in the previous article, the OCZ Synapse comes with a serial number for a dowloadable Dataplex software. This software will turn the Synapse into a cache drive for your hard drive (HDD), without joining the two in RAID configuration. What this means is that you do not need to re-install your OS and applications (necessary for installing RAID). The Synapse can be added directly to a running system without any hardware modification, but the serial number for the software is only valid for one computer. When you want to switch system, you need to uninstall the Dataplex first (internet connection required).</p>
<p>OCZ Synapse supports hard drives with a maximum capacity of 2 TB. The Dataplex software itself can be used in just one hard drive. Therefore, for maximum benefit, we recommend you to pair the Synapse with a 2 TB hard drive serving as your boot drive. Aside from that, it only works in Windows 7.</p>
<p>So, how much performance increase one can expect from adding the Synapse to an existing hard drive? To answer that question, we used a Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB hard drive which is roughly similar to its larger-capacity sibling, the Caviar Green 2 TB, in terms of performance. Before moving on to the results, let’s examine our test bed configuration first.</p>

In this first test, the HDD+Synapse pair performs almost as good as a stand-alone Synapse. That is good news indeed. It means that you can truly elevate a hard drive’s performance to match that of an SSD.</p>

<p>Again, in PC Mark 7, the hard drive experiences exponential performance increase when paired with the Synapse. As shown here, overall system performance is also improved.</p>
<h3>File Transfer Test</h3>

The 500 GB hard drive lags far behind when working on its own, but when coupled with the Synapse, its performance is increased significantly to more than twice as fast as before. It’s only a little bit slower than the stand-alone SSD.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>Want to experience SSD performance while keeping your existing HDD as the main boot drive? The OCZ Synapse might just be the answer. This cache drive improves system performance by storing frequently accessed data, which effectively multiplies your hard drive cache to several gigabytes. Write performance is improved as well because the data is written to the Synapse first before finally being stored in the hard drive.</p>
<p>Because of the improved storage speed, your system’s performance will also be increased. During our data transfer test, the increase can measure up to three fold the original amount. This can be felt immediately during daily use.</p>
<p>The OCZ Synapse is suitable for professionals or home users who already have an existing HDD serving as boot drive (and do not want to re-install the applications or buy a dedicated SSD). With the Synapse, all that is required is to plug in the Synapse and install the Dataplex software. Afterwards, you’re ready to go. Needless to say, gamers will also benefit from this performance increase as the Synapse helps reduce application loading time.</p>

<p>Apakah Anda sudah membaca kinerja SSD OCZ Synapse? Kinerja yang dimiliki tentu saja sudah melebihi sebuah hard disk biasa, walaupun memang tidak lebih kencang dari Vertex 3. Walaupun begitu, tujuan utama dari OCZ Synapse memang bukan sebagai boot drive, akan tetapi lebih kepada sebagai ruang utama cache hard disk Anda.</p>
<p>SSD ini datang dengan nomor serial dari software Dataplex. Software inilah yang akan mengubah Synapse menjadi sebuah cache drive, tanpa harus menggunakan mode RAID. Oleh karena itu, Anda tidak harus melakukan instalasi sistem operasi lagi dari awal. Anda dapat langsung menambah cache saat Anda pun sudah memiliki sistem yang berjalan. Akan tetapi, perlu Anda ketahui bahwa satu serial number hanya dapat dipasang di sebuah PC. Saat Anda ingin berpindah sistem, Anda harus terlebih dahulu melakukan uninstall software Dataplex serta terkoneksi Internet.</p>
<p>SSD OCZ Synapse saat ini mendukung hard disk dengan kapasitas maksimal 2 TB. Software Dataplex sendiri hanya mendukung penggunaan di satu hard disk. Oleh karena itu, Anda yang ingin membangun PC dengan menggunakan cache drive ini sebaiknya menggunakan sebuah hard disk dengan kapasitas maksimal 2 TB sebagai boot drive Anda. Selain itu, metode ini hanya berlaku saat Anda memakai sistem operasi Windows 7 saja. Jadi, pengguna Mac dan Linux tidak akan mendapatkan keuntungan berupa caching di SSD ini.</p>

<p>Walaupun tidak sekencang saat dijadikan sebagai drive biasa, kinerja WD + Synapse ternyata hanya terpaut sedikit saja. Perbedaan kinerja terhadap hard disk itu sendiri saja sudah lebih dari dua kali lipat.</p>
<h2>Kesimpulan</h2>
<p>Menggunakan SSD Synapse untuk cache dengan hard disk yang ada akan membuat para pemakainya seperti merasa memiliki SSD dengan kapasitas tinggi. Dataplex menyalin file-file yang setidaknya pernah diakses satu kali ke dalam Synapse sehingga kinerja bacanya menjadi lebih baik. Selain itu, kinerja penulisan juga menjadi lebih baik karena file yang akan ditulis akan ditaruh di Synapse terlebih dahulu baru dipindahkan ke hard disk.</p>
<p>Kinerja yang diberikan Synapse saat digabungkan dengan hard disk dapat membuat kinerja sistem menjadi lebih baik. Bahkan, saat melakukan transfer data, kinerjanya dapat meningkat sampai tiga kali lipat. Tentunya hal ini akan membuat pekerjaan lebih cepat selesai karena SSD Synapse akan memprosesnya terlebih dahulu sebelum data sampai pada piringan hard disk.</p>
<p>Sudah tentu dengan harga di kisaran $150, SSD ini sangat cocok untuk para pekerja profesional, seperti editor gambar dan video. Apalagi saat Anda berada di tengah sebuah proyek dan membutuhkan tambahan kinerja sistem, tinggal tancapkan saja Synapse dan install Dataplex. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hard drives come with integrated memory cache as part of their design. The cache improves performance by providing the system with fast access to frequently-used data. However, not all frequently-used data can be contained because the cache’s size is usually limited to just a few megabytes. Increasing the amount of a hard drive’s cache, therefore, will make it perform better. Aside from memory chips planted on the hard drive itself, this cache can also be provided by another storage media.</p>

<p>The above principle is incorporated by Intel in its recently-introduced Smart Response Technology, which enables hard drives caching via solid state disk (SSD), thus providing the hard drive with larger cache capacity (by using the SSD as additional cache).  This improves computer performance, but both the hard drive and SSD must be joined together in RAID configuration. With the Synapse, OCZ took a rather different approach by dedicating this SSD for the sole purpose of hard drive caching.</p>

<p>OCZ Synaps comes with the company’s DataPlex software, whose function is none other than turning the Synapse to a “cache drive”. While its intended purpose is to serve as a “cache extension” of your main hard drive, there are still quite a few possibilities one could expect from the Synaps. Imagine, for example, pairing the Synapse with a low-energy consumption 2 TB hard drive (whose performance is usually the lowest among hard drives) to get a large storage media that performs almost as good as a “real” SSD. Of course, a 2 TB SSD would be massively expensive, if available at all. This is where OCZ Synaps comes in: it seeks to combine SSD’s super fast performance with the large capacity of a conventional hard drive without breaking your bank.</p>
<p>This is the first article in a set of two that will explore the capabilities of OCZ Synapse. For now, we’re going to explore the SSD’s performance as a standalone drive. Before we begin, let’s take a look at the hardware components that we use as testbed.</p>

<p>Last but not least, we have the real world test, where Synaps once again performs better than the 120 GB version of Agility 3.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>For a 60 GB SSD meant for hard drive caching purposes, OCZ Synaps shows remarkable performance on its own. At times, it could even transfer data faster than Agility 3 120 GB. The Vertex 3 is in an entirely different league though, so you shouldn’t expect Synapse to compete directly against it. Unfortunately, Synapse comes with a rather hefty price tag of around US$ 150, perhaps due to its intended use as hard drive “accelerator”, instead of main boot drive.</p>
<p>From the benchmarks, Synapse looks promising. Could it actually speed up your hard drive? If so, then how much performance increase can you expect? Find the answer in our second article!</p>

<p>Oleh karena itu, standar SDXC dikeluarkan. Seperti kartu memori yang baru saja datang ke meja pengujian tim Jagatreview ini. Apacer meminjamkan kepada kami sebuah kartu SDXC I dengan rating Class 10 dan berkapasitas 64 GB. Bentuk dari kartu memori ini memang tidak berbeda dengan kartu SD sebelumnya. Anda juga dapat melakukan write lock pada bagian sebelah kirinya.</p>

<p>Jika dari luar bentuk yang dimilikinya sama, berbeda dengan file system yang dimilikinya. Kartu ini secara standar sudah menggunakan exFAT buatan Microsoft yang saat ini sudah dapat dibaca oleh sistem operasi windows 7 dan Vista. Untuk Windows XP, Anda hanya harus menggunakan patch yang dapat di download di Microsoft. Oleh karena itu, kamera yang ada sekarang pun juga harus melakukan upgrade firmware agar dapat menggunakan kartu ini. Sistem operasi Macintosh pun dikabarkan telah mendukung file system ini. Untuk Linux, saat ini kernel yang mendukung sedang dalam pembuatan.</p>

<p>Salah satu produk terbaru yang baru saja dikeluarkan oleh Buffalo adalah benda yang datang ke meja pengujian tim Jagatreview ini. Buffalo Cloudstation Pro Duo adalah nama dari produk tersebut. Walaupun produk baru, namun kami sepertinya mengenali bentuk dari NAS yang satu ini. Benar saja, produk yang satu ini merupakan kembaran dari <a href="http://www.jagatreview.com/2011/01/buffalo-linkstation-duo-pro-2-tb-nas-dengan-prosesor-berkecepatan-tinggi/">Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo</a> yang juga pernah kami uji sebelumnya. Hanya saja, dengan menyandang nama Cloudstation, membuat NAS yang satu ini dapat diakses dengan metoda komputasi awan atau Cloud Computing.</p>

<p>Dalam menyediakan jasa cloud computing, Buffalo bekerja sama dengan PogoPlug. Nantinya seluruh data pada NAS ini dapat diakses melalui perangkat lain yang sudah terinstal software dari PogoPlug. Hal ini akan membuat para penggunanya dapat mengakses data berupa gambar, video, audio, dokumen, dan lain sebagainya di mana saja mereka berada, asal terhubung dengan jaringan internet.</p>

<p>NAS ini berisikan dua buah hard disk dengan total kapasitas 2 TB. Untuk mode yang didukung, NAS ini hanya mendukung dua mode, sebagai drive terpisah (JBOD) dan RAID-1. Tidak ada RAID-0? Benar! Hal tersebut mungkin disebabkan  Buffalo lebih memikirkan mengenai keselamatan data pada NAS ini karena akan sering diakses melalui LAN maupun internet. Selain itu, kecepatan tinggi pun tidak akan berpengaruh pada kondisi internet Indonesia yang cenderung masih kurang kencang.</p>

<p>Unik? Tentu saja! Dengan dimensi seperti ini, flash disk ini cocok untuk ditancapkan pada sebuah netbook, notebook, atau bahkan tablet yang sering dibawa tanpa harus khawatir tersenggol benda lain. Saat ditancapkan, produk ini hanya akan membuat notebook Anda melebar sekian milimeter saja.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yes, we’ve reviewed OCZ’s Agility 3 some time ago and it was indeed a solid performer that could hold its own against its cousin, the Vertex 3. This time though, we received a smaller version (in terms of storage capacity) of the Agility 3 with 120 GB of space or half the amount of the original drive that we tested back then. 120 GB is still plentiful enough for the average user and, more importantly, smaller capacity means lower price!</p>

<p>Just like its 240 GB sibling, our sample of the 120GB Agility 3 utillizes the ONFi 1.0 standard with a transfer rate of 50 MB/s per channel, which is rather restricting for the NAND memory in use.  This standard is also known as the “asynchronous”, due to the fact that it is unaffected by host clock. Then why does OCZ promise a maximum transfer rate of 500 MB/s. Well, Agility 3 uses the SandForce 2281, a controller chip so fast in doing its job (real-time compression, read and write operations, etc), which makes it possible to reach 500 MB/s, despite the ONFi 1.0 standard limitation. There’s a catch though: that maximum transfer rate applies only to compressible files, and not the uncompressible (zip, 7zip, rar, jpg, mp4, etc.) ones.</p>

<p>So, is there any performance difference between these two versions of the Agility 3 (120 GB vs. 240 GB)? We’ll find that out soon enough, but first, here’s a complete list of the hardware used as our testbed platform:</p>
