Tanggal 13 September lalu, komunitas overclocking di seluruh dunia kembali dikejutkan dengan pecahnya rekor dunia frekuensi CPU Core i7-3770K ,sebesar 7.136 Mhz! Rekor yang dibuat oleh Overclocker Taiwan, Nick Shih, ini mengungguli rekor sebelumnya , 7.089Mhz, yang dibuat oleh HiCookie.

Ada 2(dua) poin penting yang membuat rekor ini bisa terjadi, yang pertama adalah penggunaan pendingin yang lebih ekstrim dari LN2(Liquid Nitrogen), yakniLHe (Liquid Helium) yang bersuhu kurang lebih - 230 C (minus dua ratus tiga puluh derajat Celcius), dan juga penggunaan motherboard khusus overclocking dari ASRock : ASRock Z77 OC Formula.

Perlu diketahui, ASRock Z77 OC Formula adalah motherboard pertama dari ASRock yang diciptakan dengan fokus utama pada Overclocking. Nick Shih, overclocker yang merancang motherboard ini mengutarakan bahwa beliau sangat puas dengan kinerja motherboard ASRock Z77 OC Formula : “Hitting number one on HWBOT makes my day, but scoring number one with the motherboard I designed is like the wildest dream come true! ASRock, vendor motherboard yang baru saja merilis motherboard OC-oriented pertama mereka, ASRock Z77 OC Formula, mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan menyertakan thermal paste dengan kualitas tinggi pada paket penjualan moterboard tersebut. Thermal paste tersebut adalah produk dari GELID, yaitu GC-Extreme.

Thermal paste GELID GC-Extreme selama ini dikenal sebagai thermal paste yang banyak digunakan oleh para PC power-user karena kemampuannya menyalurkan panas dengan baik. Selain itu, thermal paste tersebut juga dikenal cukup handal dalam menangani kondisi overclocking extreme dengan Liquid nitrogen. Keunggulan kedua tersebutlah yang menjadi alasan ASRock untuk secara khusus memaketkan pasta ini dengan motherboard ASRock Z77 OC Formula mereka.

Perlu diketahui bahwa tidak semua thermal paste bekerja baik dalam suhu ekstrim (dibawah minus 150 C), dan Gelid GC-Extreme adalah salah satu thermal paste yang diyakini mampu memberikan thermal transfer memadai dalam suhu luar biasa dingin yang diberikan pendingin LN2. Sebagai contoh, pada beberapa eksperimen ekstrim kami dengan prosesor AMD yang menyukai suhu dingin, salah memilih pasta bisa berakibat kegagalan mencapai clockspeed tertentu.
