Plex Hint Points to Apple Event
Plex, makers of the open source digital media center application for Intel-based Macs posted a cryptic update on their blog. The hint happens to include the date, September 1, that Apple will hold their annual music event which will be held in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco.
There are various rumors regarding Apple’s event although the most obvious ones seem to be around new versions of the iPods. It’s likely that Apple will update the iPod touch to resemble the iPhone 4 with high resolution Retina Display and FaceTime video calling features. There are rumors about the iPod nano with no click wheel and people are also left wondering what will Apple do with the iPod classic, the only one with an actual hard drive instead of flash memory.
With regards to Plex, It has been the app of choice for those who feel the Mac’s Front Row app is limited in function. Plex’s ability to pull content from various sites and in multiple formats make it a powerful replacement for Front Row. Many hobbyists have put together their own media center using Mac minis running Plex connected to their home entertainment system.
With rumors about an updated AppleTV coming on September 1, together with the Plex blog post, it’s easy for people to put the two together and form their own conclusion. While it’s entirely possible that Apple may have bought Plex, we won’t know for sure until next week. In the mean time, a lot of home entertainment enthusiasts are looking forward to the event.
