The Days of Axis International Jazz Festival 2011
Day Three: Java Jazz Festival Presents the Remarkable Indonesia
It’s the third day and the largest jazz event in Indonesia, the Java Jazz Festival, was still crowded with people. The event was started earlier than the previous days. Kirk Whalum was first to take to the stage, playing the songs from his Gospel According to Jazz (1998, 2002). Aside from showing his skills with the saxophone, Kirk Whalum also offered a chance to get a short training on how to use the instrument as skillfully as he does. That was a once-in a-lifetime opportunity, and many were not willing to let it just pass. Not everyone owns a saxophone, but getting the knowledge is a good thing nonetheless. Of course, they also get the chance to see their favorite musician up-close.
George Duke Electric, Los Amigos, Donny Suhendra, The Professor, and various other musicians performing at different stages immersed the crowd deeper into the jazzy atmosphere in the evening. Kahitna and Kilimanjaro gave off amazing special performances that stole everyone’s attention. The third performance by a newly-formed band, Drew, was satisfyingly good with the featured presence of two guest stars, Bayu Risa and Kaka Sland. At the same time, Buby Chen, one of Indonesia’s jazz maestros, appeared in a modest fashion by playing smooth jazz-infused pop music.
