Review-OCZ RevoDrive 3: SandForce 2 SSD on PCI Express
Conclusions
An SSD is so much faster compared to conventional hard drives, that is no secret. Specialized devices like OCZ’s RevoDrive 3 here pushes the envelope even further by utilizing a high-speed interface (PCI-Express x4) to reduce bottleneck effect. Indeed, this newer version is even better than the original RevoDrive, incorporating the latest SandForce controller and comes bundled with the SSD Toolbox for easy firmware upgrade and secure erase implementation.
Speaking of performance though, the RevoDrive 3 is roughly as fast the Vertex 3, which is, by far, the speediest SATA-III SSD currently on offer from OCZ. Both devices perform similarly, taking turns to occupy the top position in our test results.
Due to its expansion slot form factor, the RevoDrive 3 is suitable for server use in enterprise environment. With this cable-less SSD, you can minimize clutter, which leads in, among others, better airflow inside the computer casing. On the other hand, it is perhaps less suitable to home users, (including enthusiasts, power gamers, and the likes) than the slightly more affordable and manageable Vertex 3.
Pros
+ Very fast
+ Complimented with OCZ’s SSD Toolbox software
+ TRIM support
+ Garbage collection functionality
Cons
– “Only” as fast as the Vertex 3
– Relatively expensive, selling for around US$600 in markets outside Indonesia
